Miley Cyrus Strikes Gold

Tween sensation, Miley Cyrus, has a little movie coming out today in case you’ve been living in a cave, and the marketing budget leading up to the debut probably equaled the GDP of most developing nations.

The Hannah Montana star attended three premieres, the ACMA awards, and many of the early morning shows – and her jewelry style has been fun, fresh and littered with gold along the way.

Miley loves to layer her chains, and yellow gold appears to be her metal of choice. Stacked bangles are also a trademark look and tasteful statement earrings make their mark when there is a more elegant event on the agenda.

While there has been controversy surrounding the age-appropriateness of Miley’s choices in the past (the infamous Vanity Fair photo shoot with Annie Leibowitz, her 20-year-old boyfriend), it’s refreshing to see the star steer well clear of the Britney/Lolita syndrome. It’s just not what her brand is all about.

Call me old fashioned, but I’m glad young girls have a role model who isn’t catering to the fantasies of emotionally stunted men by wearing school girl uniforms, loads of diamonds, pounds of make up and belly baring costumes.

There’s plenty of time for that later.

And jewelry looks for this generation – including Taylor Swift and the High School Musical set – never seem to take things to Paris Hilton levels. There is bling and there is bling.

So even though I’m just as sick of seeing Miley or Hannah or whatever her name is as the rest of adult America, it’s nice to see that overexposed in her case doesn’t have to mean her body too.

Am I right? Or do I need to loosen up?

Bride Wars Premeire - Fashion Hits And Misses

Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway played with ‘bride and groom’ fashion at the premiere of their new movie, Bride Wars, last night, and the result was a fashion marvel and a major misstep. With not one, but two A-list beauties sharing top billing, we fashion hounds expect couture on the red carpet not a cutsie marketing ploy. Sorry, ladies.

Kate Hudson dazzled in a stunning black and white Oscar de la Renta gown, while Anne played groom with a tailored tuxedo jacket over what appeared to be black skinny jeans. Seriously. Skinny jeans. Two words I had hoped to never write again –particularly about the usually chic Hathaway.

And the misstep didn’t end there. The Hathaway hair choice conjured images of an Elvira-spawned lovechild with a profile reminiscent of an Olympic ski jump. It’s just all kinds of unfortunate.

Luckily, there were diamonds to cover for the calamity. Kate wore a cluster of diamond bangles, Anne sported a chunky diamond right hand ring, and a surprisingly svelte Kristen Johnston won the night with an icy diamond statement necklace. Well done.

The Hudson-produced Bride Wars tells the tale of two best friends turned rivals who are forced to share the same wedding date at The Plaza. Cat fights, backstabbing and crying jags ensue. The glittering New York premiere had its after party at (where else?) Tiffany’s, and the movie features a five-carat rock worth close to $400,000 from the iconic jewelry store.

I’m sure Anne and Kate look adorable in the film, which opens wide this Friday, January 9th. But a note to Anne’s stylist? Make the ski-slope hair and suit trousers stop.

Earrings Shine at Benjamin Button Premiere

As promised yesterday, here is a glittering recap of the red carpet jewelry fashions at the premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I just watched the Golden Globe nominations, and the film got nods in several big categories - including a Best Actor nomination for Brad Pitt!

The stylists-to-the-stars seemed to agree that a classic earring statement was the jewelry choice for the red carpet walk - from Angelina to J-Lo, Eva Longoria to Julia Ormond. Veteran actress, Mimi Rogers, brought the brooch bling out to shine, and Sharon Stone's oversized diamond dragonfly pin was cause for some serious jewelry buzz. Sorry. Pun intended.

While there were some that overdid it (Alfre Woodard - you are such a great actress but the gold chains aren't working), most of the looks - from today's A-listers to the ladies of yesteryear - were just like the movie. Top notch.

Cate Blanchett's Golden Gown

The divine Cate Blanchette didn’t wear any jewelry for the premiere of her latest film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I was so disappointed. How can you share a screen with Brad Pitt and then a red carpet with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez and not bring out at least a little bling?

Then I took a closer look at her dress, and it all made sense. The bell-shaped Steve McQueen couture frock is literally made out of metallics and gold beads! Adding anything else would have been complete overkill.

I’m not sure if I actually like the frock, but you have to give Blanchett credit for pushing the fashion envelope. The sculpted gown is made only by special order, and McQueen seamstresses require several fittings to get things just ‘sew’.

If you have $120,000 to spend, you too can light up the night with a bell-shaped McQueen gown of your own. Apparently, some red carpet-watching fashion hound already put in an order after spotting Cate at the premier, according to McQueen’s New York Store.

Stay tuned for my recap of other notable jewelry looks that made an appearance that night. Aside from A-listers like Angelina, J-Lo and Eva Longoria – there are surprising showings from style veterans, Sharon Stone, Julia Ormand (Brad’s costar in this film and, of course, Legends of the Fall. No one did unrequited love quite like those two), and Mimi Rogers. Yes, the very same “I used to be married to Tom Cruise when he was 25” Mimi Rogers!

Random red carpets are often the best red carpets.

In the meantime, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button opens in theaters on Christmas Day.
